While you can’t stop nature, you can prepare for it, and AARP Delaware is urging residents to do just that.

Hurricane Sandy battered the state in 2012, causing flooding, power outages and $5.5 million in damage. Many older adults are particularly at risk during disasters because of mobility limitations or medical needs.

To protect yourself before a hurricane hits, create a family communications plan, prepare an emergency kit, buy a power generator, keep copies of vital documents handy and learn your best evacuation route. For county maps, go to dema.delaware.gov and click on “Delaware Hurricane Evacuation Guide.”

To help your family or community prepare for a storm, go to createthegood.org/toolkit/operation-hurricane-prepare.
