Sixty years ago, President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law, giving all Americans over age 65 access to health coverage. Here in Delaware, about 242,000 residents are enrolled in Medicare. That includes traditional Medicare from the federal government, and from insurance companies that offer Medicare Advantage.

AARP Delaware has named Ted Spickler the 2025 recipient of the AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association’s most prestigious volunteer tribute. Named for AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, the award honors individuals who embody her motto: "To serve, not to be served."

AARP Delaware State Director Lucretia Young has named Bonnie Wu as Associate State Director for Advocacy. This new hire will usher in a new era of strategic advocacy, providing Delawareans with more choices for how they live as they age. AARP Delaware serves 192,000 members in Delaware.

As 2024 comes to a close, AARP Delaware’s advocacy work hasn’t slowed down. We’ve won in our efforts to advocate for you as the 2025 bills are signed into law by Governor Meyer. We’ve been supporting local efforts to create affordable housing throughout the summer and fall. Here’s a recap and a look ahead:
AARP is proud to announce our fifth annual bipartisan class of Capitol Caregivers, who fought this year to increase support for family caregivers and their loved ones. Nationwide, AARP has recognized legislators in each state for the support they have provided for caregivers. Here in Delaware, Reps. Ruth Briggs King and Debra Heffernan are this year's awardees. AARP in Delaware thanks them for all they do to make life better for Delaware's 123,000 family caregivers.
AARP will host Senator Chris Coons for a LIVE conversation on health care, which was one of the most important issues in the recent elections. The Senator will give insights and take questions on the Affordable Care Act, RX drug prices, family caregiving and more!
