The Atlantic hurricane season starts June 1 and runs through November. AARP Florida, state officials and disaster relief agencies want Floridians to start preparing now. AARP Florida will host a virtual disaster readiness workshop on Thursday, June 20, with emergency management specialists.
Eight Florida entities won 2023 AARP Community Challenge grants, totaling $102,000. The program funds projects aimed at improving community livability. This year's awards in Florida will help fund a mobile legal clinic, park restoration and asphalt artwork, among other initiatives.
After retiring from his job in aviation, Ken Thomas, 69, volunteered to help at an AARP convention in Florida. “They liked what they saw in me, and I enjoyed what I saw in AARP,” he says.
ADUs, sometimes called in-law suites, are small homes or apartments on the same lot as a single-family house. Proponents say they are a critical part of the solution to Florida’s affordable housing crisis.
Among the first of its kind in the nation, the new system will include key information on court-appointed guardians, including how many people they oversee, if they’re registered with the state and if there are disciplinary actions against them.
