Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and other debilitating ailments is the goal of the “Get Off the Couch!” six-week walking program sponsored by the AARP Kansas City Team and the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department. The program is free, open to the public, and all ages are welcome to participate.
Two kick-off events are scheduled for April 1, 2014 at the Southeast Community Center, 4201 E. 63 rd St. Interested participants can attend either the 9-10 a.m. or 6-7 p.m. kick-off where they will register to participate and join a walking group that is convenient for them.
“Individuals will walk on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Southeast Community Center and the new Kansas City School District Track west of 63 rd St. and Swope Parkway,” explained Franklin Walker, walking program AARP volunteer coordinator. “It’s possible that some groups will use other community centers or walking trails – it really will depend on the walking group leader and participants.”
