Español Dating back centuries, Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration to honor the ancestors of families of Mexican and Central American heritage. Rather than mourning the dead, the festival focuses on remembering their lives.
AARP in Los Angeles is hosting a free Día de los Muertos event from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29, at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, 501 N. Main St.
“AARP is thrilled to join LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes for this year’s Día de los Muertos celebration as we pay homage to our dead through music, dance and hands-on gardening, plus culinary and craft workshops for the whole family,” said Adriana Mendoza, AARP California associate state director of community.
“We will be decorating pan de muerto, the traditional Day of the Dead bread, making and coloring a Mexican skull [ calavera] mask and creating a Día de los Muertos shrine to honor the deceased,” Mendoza said.
The celebration will also feature traditional Mexican cuisine, including tamales and other treats, folkloric dancing and a play inspired by centuries-old traditions.
AARP staff will be on hand to discuss other local activities.
