Kentucky Volunteer Leader Honored for Decades of Service

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Volunteer Receives Association’s Top Volunteer Honor

Louisville resident receives Andrus Award for Community Service, donates $2,500 to help local animal rescue organization efforts.

Dick Trowbridge is widely recognized as a dedicated leader reaching out to improve his community with volunteerism and service to others. His time and talent as a local volunteer and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide District Coordinator have earned him this well-deserved recognition with the AARP Andrus Award for Community Service.

Trowbridge receives the 2013 AARP Kentucky Andrus Award for his volunteer spirit and energetic example of community service. The award is AARP’s most prestigious and visible volunteer award, given to recognize outstanding people who positively impact the lives of those in their community. As a volunteer for AARP Foundation Tax-Aide and other nonprofit organizations, he has utilized his professional career skills and passion for service to serve countless individuals across the Kentuckiana region.

With the same generous spirit that Dick gives to Tax-Aide, he decided to forgo the usual fanfare of a formal presentation ceremony. Instead, he was able to share the cost savings of a "fancy" award presentation and AARP Kentucky was able donate $2,500 with a non-profit of his choosing.

AARP Kentucky presented the Association’s top volunteer award, one of only 50 awarded nationwide, at a celebration with Golden Retriever Rescue and Adoption of Needy Dogs (GRRAND) at their annual event in Louisville. In lieu of a formal award banquet, AARP Kentucky and Mr. Trowbridge agreed to donate $2,500 dollars to support GRRAND.

According to AARP Kentucky State President Jim Kimbrough, “Dick’s long hours as a community volunteer and as an AARP Foundation Tax-Aide District Coordinator are an extraordinary example of AARP’s founding vision, ‘To Serve, Not to Be Served’. Dick’s tireless volunteer service makes me proud to be a fellow volunteer and AARP member. The AARP Andrus Award for Community Service honors individuals like Dick who create positive social change in their communities and inspire others to do the same. His work and achievements reflect AARP’s vision of bringing lifetimes of experience and leadership to serve all generations.”

Mr. Trowbridge has worked in nearly every capacity as a Tax-Aide volunteer and was instrumental in District Level coordination, organizing host sites, needed equipment and supplies, communications, and recruiting and training new volunteers.

Mr. Trowbridge was selected from dozens of Kentucky volunteer nominations for his dedication and commitment to volunteerism and especially his nearly 30 years of service to the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program in Louisville.
