Family caregiving is a labor of love, to be sure. But it can also be overwhelming, stressful and exhausting. That’s why we’re fighting for commonsense solutions to help.
The Kentucky Family Caregivers Act is a new law that helps family caregivers when their loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home. It provides some commonsense solutions to make their lives a little easier. That’s why AARP Kentucky worked with state lawmakers to enact it.
KY Family Caregivers Act - three key provisions.
The first is identification. The patient now can designate a family caregiver in the medical record when admitted to the hospital.
The second is notification. The family caregiver is informed if their loved one is to be discharged home or transferred to another facility.
And the third is training. Hospitals shall provide instructions on after-care tasks family caregivers will have to perform at home, such as medication management, injections and wound care.
