Steve’s caregiving journey with his mom Shirley, age 86, has been a long road that began shortly after she had a stroke. Shirley was living on her own in an apartment in Keene and soon began having memory issues. Eventually, she was found several times confused and wandering at night and knocking on neighbor’s doors.

While education is critical to combatting fraud, we can’t educate our way out of the fraud crisis.

Barbara is struggling to keep herself and her husband Tom afloat. Twelve years ago, Tom suffered a permanent traumatic brain injury that makes it impossible for him to work or care for himself. In the beginning he was treated at various hospitals and rehab centers, which added more bills to Barbara’s daily worries. These days, Barbara is her husband’s primary caregiver.

For the first time since AARP began publishing the Scorecard in 2011, more than half of Medicaid long-term care dollars nationwide for older adults and people with physical disabilities went to home- and community-based services instead of nursing homes and other institutions.

November is National Family Caregivers Month, which seeks to shine a bright light on the more than 48 million American heroes, including 168,000 here in New Hampshire, helping care for their loved ones independently at home – where they want to be.

The AARP New Hampshire Andrus Award for Community Service honors Granite Staters age 50-plus who make a powerful difference in their communities. Winners are nominated by their fellow AARP volunteers and/or the AARP NH Executive Council volunteers. Nominations are evaluated by AARP New Hampshire based on how the volunteer’s work has improved the community, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers. The award is named after our founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, an educator and champion of aging.
