AARP New Mexico is celebrating Social Security’s 90th Anniversary with a special event, Thursday, June 28, in Santa Fe. Join us for a conversation with Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández on the important role Social Security plays in our state and how we can protect it for future generations.
AARP New Mexico is accepting nominations for its 2025 Andrus Award for Community Service, which honors 50+ New Mexicans who are sharing their experience, talent, and skills to enrich the lives of their community members. Nominations will be accepted now until Friday, Aug. 29.
An emergency can hit at a moment’s notice – whether it’s a natural disaster like flooding, wildfires or high winds, or a personal emergency like a house fire.
“When an emergency hits, adrenaline kicks in making it hard to think straight,” said Joseph Roybal Sanchez, AARP New Mexico State Director. “You may only have minutes to get your family, your pets and yourself to safety.”
$69,000 in grants aim to help residents of all ages, especially older adults, improve how they live, move, and stay connected in their neighborhoods through innovative local projects.
When lawmakers return to Santa Fe this month, they will likely consider budget cuts because of the COVID-19 crisis and the economic downturn.
AARP New Mexico supports the creation of the Prescription Drug Affordability Board to oversee and monitor prescription drug costs in the state and will work during the 2021 New Mexico Legislative Session to get a bill passed establishing the board.
AARP New Mexico is joining with the Parkinson’s Foundation for a special virtual presentation, Thursday, Dec. 10, on recognizing the early signs of Parkinson’s disease. The free event is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. MT.
“We felt it was important to bring some light to this disease because its progression can develop overtime and the symptoms can vary --- meaning they may be the result of Parkinson’s disease or possibly caused by other issues, so it is important to gather more information,” said Joseph P. Sanchez, AARP New Mexico State Director.
AARP New Mexico is hosting a virtual teletown hall Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., connecting veterans across the state with resources.

AARP recently announced that three New Mexico organizations are recipients of a 2020 AARP Community Challenge grant. Two of the grantees are in Las Cruces, the South Central Regional Transit District and the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership, while the third grantee, the Embudo Valley Library and Community Center, is in Dixon.
