AARP North Carolina Awards Charlotte Volunteers for Their Commitment to Serving the 50+ Community in the Queen City

CHARLOTTE– Two women were honored by AARP North Carolina this week for their commitment to improving the lives of the 50 plus in the community in the Queen City.

Lori Love of Charlotte has been instrumental in helping mid-life adults think about their own financial and health security when as they get older. As an instructor for AARP’s Living Longer, Living Smarter program, she has helped people from all over Mecklenburg County prepare for the challenges of long term care. Love also volunteers with Hands on Charlotte, Classroom Central and serves on the Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee for the Ombudsman Program.

Betsy Thompson was also honored by AARP for her work in bringing free educational workshops to people all over Charlotte. Programs sponsored by AARP help people prepare for their future health needs, find jobs, save more for retirement, protect themselves from fraud, network and have fun. Thompson received the AARP Community Commitment Award for her efforts to make Charlotte a better place to live.

AARP Associate State Director Mike Olender said, “For more than 55 years, AARP has depended upon the strength of its dedicated and skilled volunteers to make a lasting impact and improve the lives for all as the age. AARP greatly appreciates for the great work of all of our volunteers who enable us to continue to continue its mission of helping people make the most out life at 50 and beyond.

AARP’s network of volunteers have facilitated a variety of AARP programs and activities in the city over the last two years. Dozens of events including workshops, booths at community events, speaking engagements, and community service projects are currently on the calendar for 2015 with the aim of making a positive impact on the lives of people 50+.
