RALEIGH — Mastewal Bailey, a rising senior at NC State University, will be building on her academic coursework through an internship at AARP North Carolina. Driven by a passion for community building and advocacy, Bailey hopes to engage in meaningful work while furthering the mission of AARP.

Born in Kamashi, Ethiopia, and raised in Fayetteville, NC, Bailey’s cultural background has instilled a respect for community building, a value she carries into her professional and personal life.

Bailey’s journey into advocacy and community engagement began early, fueled by a desire to help those who cannot advocate for themselves.

“I have always believed in the power of community and in standing up for those who may not have a voice,” Bailey shared.

She added, “Growing up, I witnessed my mom, a social worker, dedicating herself to making a difference in people's lives.” Inspired by her mother’s dedication, Bailey chose a similar path.

Currently pursuing dual degrees in Business Administration-Marketing and International Studies, Bailey is also involved in organizations such as the Ethiopian and Eritrean Student Association (EESA), the African American Cultural Center (AACC), the Black Scholars' Network, and Consult Your Community (CYC). Through these platforms, she has honed her skills in leadership, communication, and community outreach.

In explaining her decision to intern at AARP, Bailey emphasized the urgent need for initiative-taking engagement in shaping policies that will affect future generations. “I firmly believe that we need to start making changes now because eventually, these polices on aging will affect me and my community,” she remarked. “It’s about taking the initiative and ensuring that we are creating a future where everyone can thrive.”

At the state office of AARP, Bailey is focusing her efforts on initiative aimed at creating livable communities, promoting wellness programs, and empowering individuals to age on their terms. Her dedication to these causes’ stems from a fundamental belief in the importance of empowering aging individuals to live their lives how they choose, regardless of social norms or constraint. “In our rapidly aging society, its crucial to prioritize initiatives that promote inclusivity, wellness, and independence,” Bailey asserted. “By advocating for livable communities and comprehensive wellness programs, we can create a future where everyone has the opportunity to live their best life, regardless of age or background.”

As Bailey continues her internship at AARP, she stays committed to driving positive change and empowering communities to thrive. Through her unwavering dedication to advocacy and community engagement, she is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals across generations.
