Coffee Shop Conversation Series Offers Discussion April 27 About Age-Friendly Transportation Options in Ohio

“I can’t get there” should never be a reason you can’t do something in your community. You need access to all kinds of transportation, but that’s not always the reality.

“In too many Ohio communities, it can be impossible to get around if you don’t have a car, and sidewalks are few and far between,” said Ernestine Jackson, Central Ohio AARP volunteer.

That's why AARP Ohio is hosting “Get in the Know and Stay on the Go” Coffee Shop Conversation at the Bexley Library on April 27.

Doors open at 2:30 p.m. for coffee and other refreshments, and our program will start promptly at 3 p.m. Hear from leading experts about the current and future options, discuss your concerns, and have your questions answered while enjoying a cup of coffee.

Driving shouldn’t be the only way to get around. Pedestrians need sidewalks and crossable streets. Dedicated bicycle lanes benefit nondrivers and drivers alike. Public transit options can range from the large-scale (trains, buses, light rail) to the small (taxis, shuttles or ride share services). Safe, affordable, accessible and dependable options are vital to help people stay a vibrant part of their community, so they can get to work, school, health-care appointments and other places they need to be. Transportation is the vital link that connects people to economic, social and civic opportunities.

“To be age friendly, cities, towns and rural areas should provide affordable transportation options and safe, walkable streets,” Jackson said. “These resources will enhance personal independence and allow residents to age in place.”

Register today and learn more about what is possible in your community. Guests include experts Marisa Sheldon, Director, Age-Friendly Innovation Center and Director, Age-Friendly Columbus and Franklin County; Emma Strange, MSW, Mobility Coordinator/Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission; Corrina Hyde, Social Services Program Manager, Mobility Services, Central Ohio Transit Authority.
