Odunde Festival: Celebrate a New Year

JAZZ

For 40 years, Philadelphians have been celebrating African culture by taking to the streets—a street festival, that is. The Odunde Festival on June 12 brings a taste of Africa to South Street in one of the city’s oldest, historically African American neighborhoods.

Odunde means “Happy New Year” in the language of the Yoruba people of Nigeria.

Revelers are invited to drop by the AARP Block Party, which will have a fun photo booth and a wall where everyone can write an answer to the question of the day.

The celebration also features live music on several stages and hundreds of vendors from all over the world, selling fried fish, curried goat and fried chicken, as well as crafts, clothing and jewelry. Go to odundefestival.org for details.
