Thanks to our AARP volunteers who turned out Saturday for Back to School Celebration "Packing Day." It takes a small army to fill 15,000 backpacks with school supplies and health & nutrition information. But we did it. Thanks to Sodexo, our host, and volunteers from all the Back to School Celebration partners. AARP Rhode Island is proud to sponsor this annual event that means so much to struggling Rhode Island families and encourages learning. Distribution is August 17. If you would like to volunteer to help out at one of the sites around the state, contact Deborah Miller at 401-248-2654.

AARP Rhode Island continues to work with a coalition including the RI Women’s Fund and the Senior Agenda on a bill to establish a Temporary Caregiver Insurance (TCI) program for caregivers similar to Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI). With TDI, there is paid time off when you are ill – with TCI it allows time off to care for a seriously ill family member. As with TDI, it is totally funded by employee contributions. The current estimate is that each employee would pay an additional 83 cents per week to fund the program.
Summer means another opportunity to help get Rhode Island school children of to a great start of the school year. The annual Back to School Celebration -- now in its 15th year -- provides new backpacks filled with school supplies and nutritional information to some 15,000 students. The effort not only encourages learning, but helps families that struggle with back-to-school purchases.
