AARP Rhode Island mourns the passing and celebrates the life of 2008 Ethel Percy Andrus Award winner for Community Service, Virginia Tierney, who passed away Nov. 3 at the age of 98. The recognition by AARP is noted the Providence Journal obituary below, but the tribute does not begin to tell the story of her longtime dedication to our organization and its mission.
AARP@TheStateHouse aims to organize volunteers who will make their presence known at the State House every Tuesday of the legislative session and on days of key votes.
When AARP Rhode Island volunteer leader Julia Valles invites people over for supper, it's a big job. She has taken on the task of organizing and running AARP's "Community Suppers" at the St. Martin de Porres Community Center in Providence's West End.
Thanks to our AARP volunteers who turned out Saturday for Back to School Celebration "Packing Day." It takes a small army to fill 15,000 backpacks with school supplies and health & nutrition information. But we did it. Thanks to Sodexo, our host, and volunteers from all the Back to School Celebration partners. AARP Rhode Island is proud to sponsor this annual event that means so much to struggling Rhode Island families and encourages learning. Distribution is August 17. Veteran activist and organizer will play a key role in
AARP Rhode Island calls on members and volunteers to take part in this event organized by the Rhode Alliance for Retired Americans. Using the chained consumer price index (CCPI) to determine seniors' Social Security benefits will take an estimated $127 billion out of the pockets of current and future retirees in the next 10 years alone.
Members of the West End Community and Upper South Providence are invited to attend a new series of community suppers for the purpose of getting more people involved in activities and services at St. Martin de Porres Community Center. The event takes place the second Wednesday of the month through October. Suppers are served at 5 p.m. followed by an informational talk and live entertainment that goes until 7 p.m. A $3 donation is requested to cover the cost of food, provided by Meals on Wheels.
Summer means another opportunity to help get Rhode Island school children of to a great start of the school year. The annual Back to School Celebration -- now in its 15th year -- provides new backpacks filled with school supplies and nutritional information to some 15,000 students. The effort not only encourages learning, but helps families that struggle with back-to-school purchases.
The César Estrada Chávez Committee of Rhode Island honors AARP Rhode Island Associate State Director - Outreach Deborah Miller with the 2013 Cesar Chavez Award. She will be honored at State House ceremonies on Friday, March 29.
PROVIDENCE – AARP Rhode Island State Director Kathleen Connell today announced the appointment of Alan B. Neville as State President.
