Juneteenth is the annual celebration held nationwide in various communities to celebrate the Emancipation of Slaves.  It was in June of 1865 that word finally reached Galveston, Texas that the War had ended and slaves were freed.  Roanoke's celebration was held in Washington Park on Saturday, June 9, 2018.  It was sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was co-sponsored by AARP and the City of Roanoke.
