Supporting the "Go Local" Effort

By Phil Zarlengo, AARP Volunteer Transitions alumni coordinator and former AARP Board chair

Over the past few years, AARP’s State Offices have been testing approaches for making AARP more visible and relevant in roughly 120 local communities across the country. A subset of those communities have been earmarked for an even deeper body of work and research to track the impact of investments in local advertising, special events and forums.

It is clear that sustainability is a critical factor and I am pleased that the next wave of AARP’s “go local” work will focus on developing community-based volunteer-led teams. To support this work and refine the skills of volunteers and staff, the Community Leadership Academy will launch this summer. Participants in the Academy are teams of volunteers and staff who have agreed to work as a pair in a specific community.

Because this is an area of work that Volunteer Alumni have indicated is of interest, I hope you will join me for a Q&A-style conversation with the designers of the Community Leadership Academy on Tuesday, June 21, 2-3 pm ET. This will be your chance to have a preview of this new resource that will help AARP “go local” with a sustainable presence through leadership from our skilled volunteers.

To join, dial in to 1-866-215-3402 and when prompted, enter the code: 4342385#. Please take a moment today to RSVP by emailing volunteer@aarp.org with the subject line: June 21 Volunteer Alumni Leader call.
