Transportation Fair to Help Older Drivers Be Safer on the Road

Many of Colorado's safest and most experienced drivers benefit from information that helps them adjust to an evolving array of changes in car technologies, roadway designs, traffic laws and rules, and also in themselves. Many of these Baby Boomers have no plans to retire their freedom and independence by giving up the wheel of their car anytime soon.

To help seniors stay behind the wheel longer, the first annual seniors’ transportation fair will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at the headquarters of the Seniors' Resource Center located at 3227 Chase Street, Denver, Colo., 80212. The free event is produced by ROAD (Reaching Older Adult Drivers) program, an initiative funded by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and co-sponsored by the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Seniors’ Resource Center.

The event's keynote speaker is Mark Koebrich, a former, longtime anchorman with 9News and current spokesperson for Senior Source, an educational campaign that helps older adults and their caregivers access information and resources on aging and caregiving

The four-hour fair will include health care professionals to address how seniors can adjust to their changing health conditions and remain safe on the road and mobile in the community; automotive industry professionals to provide hands-on updates on the latest technologies in vehicles; traffic engineers to help seniors better understand roadway design and signage; as well as CarFit®, a check-up program that shows seniors ways to fit-well in their cars for greater comfort and control.

These topics, and more, will be featured at the fair to enhance seniors' confidence, judgment and reactions while on the road.
