On Friday, September 19th, 2025, AARP Virgin Islands State Director Troy De Chabert-Schuster, is set to testify before the 36th Legislature of the Virgin Islands in support of amendments to the territory’s Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Prevention Act (Bill 36-0099).

This past summer, AARP Virgin Islands (AARP VI), in partnership with the Virgin Islands Department of Human Services, successfully convened the first two of three Elder Justice Summit sessions. These gatherings brought together legislators, financial professionals, advocates, legal professionals, first responders, law enforcement, and mandated reporters. The consensus was clear: existing protections are insufficient. Findings from the first two sessions have shaped AARP VI’s legislative priorities, and the organization has pledged to lead the charge in advancing changes that will safeguard the financial futures of our elders.  AARP VI has already briefed Senators Novelle E. Francis, Jr., Avery L. Lewis, Kurt A. Vialet, Kenneth L. Gittens, and Marvin A. Blyden of the 36th Legislature, and has engaged the Lieutenant Governor’s Office.

AARP VI is thrilled to announce that the first financial institution in the Virgin Islands to join us in the fight against fraud is FirstBank Virgin Islands. After the August 21st Elder Justice Summit, representatives from FirstBank Virgin Islands left energized and inspired to protect Virgin Islanders against fraud and financial exploitation. This week, FirstBank Virgin Islands became the first in the territory to enroll in the AARP BankSafe training program.

The Digital Bridge Initiative is a FREE digital literacy project led by the Virgin Islands Youth Advocacy Coalition, Inc. (VIYAC) and funded by AARP through the annual AARP Challenge Grant.

Esta reunión es posterior a la primera en marzo de 2023, compuesta por un grupo de trabajo que incluyó agencias gubernamentales de las Islas Vírgenes de EE. UU., el sector privado y la comunidad en general.
En Español | AARP in The Virgin Islands met with members of the Culture, Aging, Sports, Parks, and Youth Committee of the 35th Legislature of the Virgin Islands and other aging advocates yesterday, September 7, 2023, to discuss recommendations presented by AARP-VI to combat elder abuse and specifically to strengthen the anti-elder abuse law, 34 V.I.C., Act No. 8318, Elder & Dependent Adult Abuse Prevention Act of 2020. This meeting is one subsequent to a first in March 2023, composed of a working group that included US Virgin Islands government agencies, the private sector, and the community at large.

AARP Virgin Islands and the Government Employees’ Retirement System are teaming up to offer financial planning workshops to government employees, retirees and others.
En Español | Today, June 30, 2023, AARP in The Virgin Islands announced one organization in the Territory will receive the 2023 Community Challenge Grant – part of the largest group of grantees to date, with $3.6 million awarded among 310 organizations nationwide. Grantees will implement quick-action projects that help communities become more livable by improving public places; transportation; housing; digital connections; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and more, with an emphasis on the needs of adults age 50 and older.
En Español | AARP in The Virgin Islands commissioned a song featuring local artists and Soca and Quelbe music. The song titled “AARP Makes Me Happy” is an infusion of locally recognized voices such as Eldrige “Edgy” Christian, Nikki Brooks, and Delyno Brown aka Pressure Busspipe, the sounds of the renowned Flautist and VI Music Ambassador Stanley A. Jacobs, Ph.D. of the Ten Sleepless Knights, and backup vocals by Aquila Jackson. The song was written and composed by Luis Ible, Jr. and produced by Malvern Gumbs. The lyrics describe the work of AARP in communities across the nation blending the rhythms and sounds of Quelbe and Soca music.
