Chapter President and VP Majorie at mile marker 1.5

The AARP Chesapeake Chapter #2165 is disrupting aging. The hot heat of the Summer hasn't stopped the Hampton Roads walking group from meeting every Friday morning at 9:30 am at The Oak Grove Lake Park in Chesapeake. The core and regular participants are from the AARP Chesapeake Chapter #2165 which the President and VP Majorie and Esther respectively have taken the lead in encouraging participation.

Other Chapter members and AARP volunteers such as Barbara B. and Esther walk regularly. These ladies invited their husbands and another chapter member has brought her college-age grandson to join the walking group.  They encourage participants to use the buddy system when walking. The advantages of using the buddy system are forming new friendships while burning calories and makes walking up 1.3-3 miles more enjoyable.

They will continue to walk during the Summer (weather permitting) to maintain the momentum. Some have seen improvements to their health, saying that they feel more energetic and get a better nights sleep.

Everyone is welcome to walk at their own pace, and walk as little or as much of the route as they choose from half a mile up to 3.1 miles.  Walking for Grownups is free, open to all ages, walkers are not required to be members of AARP to participate.
