One in five Americans is a family caregiver and over half live in multigenerational households, according to a 2021 AARP Home and Community survey. The need for family caregivers is likely to increase because of two conflicting factors: More than 70 percent of seniors will need some type of long-term care, yet 90 percent of adults over 65 want to remain in their own homes and age in place.

In a new advisory, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, M.D. warned that loneliness is far more than just a bad feeling — it is an epidemic that harms both individual and societal health. Social connection is “a fundamental human need, as essential to survival as food, water, and shelter,” he said. Researchers with Harvard’s famed Adult Development Study (ongoing since 1939) also find that relationships are key to long-term health and happiness.
