The 50th annual Senior Day in the Park, held recently at Foresthill Park in South Richmond, brought together hundreds of seniors from throughout the city to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.
Hosted by Cavelle Phillips, a minister and former disc jockey, the event featured live music, delicious food, fun, games and lively conversation.
Various organizations and agencies including AARP Virginia were on hand to provide valuable information relevant to the senior community. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about topics such as Medicare and Medicaid, insurance options, aging in their own home, home safety measures, healthcare services and legal aid. Also available for sale were books, jewelry and beauty products.
Amy Capistran, fund development coordinator for Rebuilding Together Richmond, shared the organization’s mission: Revitalizing Homes/Rebuilding Lives. The organization helps seniors to repair older homes, allowing them to age in place.
Anthony McLean, from the office of Emergency Management, provided a list of items to have on hand in the event of an emergency, for example, three days of non-perishable food, drinking water, first aid kits and flashlights.
Senior Day in the Park offered a day of fun and entertainment. It also served as a single point of contact for seniors to access resources and support. Officials said that as the event continues to thrive and grow, it symbolizes the city’s commitment to its senior residents.
