RICHMOND – AARP Virginia State Director Jim Dau today praised members of the Virginia House of Delegates for passing a state budget that includes Medicaid expansion.  The bipartisan effort increases access to health care for 400,000 Virginians, including 95,000 people over 50 who are not yet eligible for Medicare.

“The Virginia House of Delegates helped lead the way on this important move to provide health insurance coverage to more Virginians who need it. Going back to the regular session earlier this year, leaders from both parties in the House were able to come together in the best interests of the people they serve, and in so doing led the state’s senate to follow suit.

“While AARP Virginia has concerns about some provisions of the Medicaid expansion plan – including a work requirement and lock-out periods that could provide unnecessary hurdles to obtaining coverage – we are encouraged that the majority of members of the Virginia General Assembly recognize the vital need for increasing access to health care.  Closing the coverage gap will strengthen local economies and protect access to health care in rural areas.

“AARP Virginia and our dedicated volunteers across the Commonwealth look forward to working with Virginia’s lawmakers in the coming months and years to build on the progress achieved tonight. Together, we’ll help more people get and stay healthy, while strengthening local economies and protecting access to health care across the state,” Dau said.
