AARP Eye Center
Longstanding AARP Community Partner, Bedford Ride, would like your help assisting with the transportation assistance program offered to residents of Bedford County at a low or no cost basis.
Bedford Rides assists cancer patients, dialysis patients, veterans, and many more community members who need help getting to their doctor’s appointments.
The Bedford Ride Transportation Assist Program was founded in 2001 after two independent studies found that transportation to medical appointments was a huge problem for Bedford. This lack of transportation caused more patients to eventually need emergency medical care, clogging up local hospitals. Bedford Ride was created to change that, originally just servicing Bedford, the program has since grown to cover the whole county and now even takes patients to neighboring counties.
Volunteers are currently needed to serve in the following roles: drivers and volunteer coordinators.
- Drivers are provided with an agency owned vehicle, gas, and insurance needed to transport Bedford County residents to their medical appointments.
- All driving volunteers will be trained on how to assist community members with walkers and wheelchairs.
- All driving volunteers must pass a background check, drug test, and DMV check.
- Volunteer Coordinators work from home, matching up local volunteer drivers to community members in need.
- All volunteer coordinators must pass a background check and drug test.
