April is tax time, and it’s also a perfect opportunity to get wise about how you spend, save and invest your cash. AARP West Virginia is cohosting a series of educational events during Money Smart Week, April 21-28.

One in 10 Americans 60 and older have experienced elder abuse or neglect. In almost 60 percent of cases, the perpetrator was a family member, usually an adult child or spouse.

About 1 in 10 older Americans have reported experiencing elder abuse, and most experts believe the crime is underreported. According to the National Council on Aging, just 1 in 14 cases of abuse against people age 60-plus is reported to authorities.

As part of the West Virginia Financial Exploitation Task Force, AARP fought successfully in the 2016 legislative session for three new laws that protect older West Virginians from abuse and fraud.

AARP West Virginia is partnering with more than 30 organizations, including the Federal Reserve Bank, Federal Trade Commission, and FINRA Investor Education Foundation to promote financial wellness during 2016 West Virginia MoneySmart Week ® , April 23 – 30.
