On Oct. 11-12, AARP Wyoming will take part in a document shredding, as well presentations by retired lawman Bob Melvin, in Sheridan, Dayton and Clearmont. The goal, is to help Wyoming’s citizens better protect themselves from scams and identity theft.

“I want people to understand that anybody can be the victim of fraud, but if we can help people to understand the threats, we can help to protect them,” Melvin says. “We will talk about internet safety, as well as common sense ways to avoid identity theft and fraud.”

Research shows that more than $20 billion was stolen from about 13 million victims in 2012, with older adults tend to be bilked out of about $3 billion every year. AARP has a dedicated fraud watch team, which attempts to protect all Americans from fraud and scams.
