Last month, AARP Wyoming State President Stella Montano and I joined AARP leaders from across all 50 states as we took to Capitol Hill with a clear, unified message: do right by America’s 50+ population. As part of AARP’s 2025 Lobby Day, volunteers and staff held over 400 meetings with lawmakers in the House and Senate to press for action on the issues that matter most—protecting Social Security, preventing harmful cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, and providing real support to the nation’s 48 million family caregivers.

Sheridan’s Community Action Team (CAT) saddled up for a meaningful cause during this year’s annual WYO Rodeo Parade, bringing AARP’s fraud prevention message to thousands along the parade route. With the spirited theme, “AARP: Lassoing Fraud,” CAT members creatively spotlighted the importance of protecting seniors and the community from scams and financial fraud.
In the legislative calendar, the last week or so of the session is spent lobbying lawmakers for interim topics. The process goes like this - the 10 joint committees (not including Journal or Rules) meet between four and six times per year between legislative sessions. They take testimony on issues and, if they decide to do so, turn that testimony into bill drafts for the next session. More often than not, bills that come out of committee have a much better chance of passing into law than bills sponsored by individual legislators.
AARP Wyoming is now accepting applications for the 2019 Community Challenge grant program to fund “quick-action” projects that spark change in local communities.The grant program, which is now in its third year, is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which aims to make communities great places to live for everyone.
Beginning in February and continuing through April 15, AARP Foundation is providing free tax assistance and preparation through its Tax-Aide program. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service. Since its inception, the program has served more than 68 million taxpayers.
Sheridan-area residents donated nearly 750 pounds of food to two Sheridan County food banks during the sixth annual Souper Bowl, a food drive led by AARP Wyoming’s Sheridan Community Action Team.
AARP’s Sheridan Community Action Team will host a screening of “Catch Me If You Can,” at the WYO Theater in Sheridan at 2 p.m. on Feb. 9. The movie and snacks are both free thanks to AARP.
In the month of February, AARP Wyoming’s Casper Action Team and the Casper Humane Society will partner to offer no-cost adoptions for people age 50 and over who want to adopt pets five years old or older. The program, known as 50 and 5, is made possible by a contribution from AARP Wyoming.
