AARP Minnesota 2021 Andrus Award Recipient: Mohammed Mehdi

A new AARP survey of voters ages 25+ found an overwhelming majority (92%) agree that elected officials should support legislation that makes it easier for all workers to save for retirement from their paycheck. Further, 91% of voters support establishing a program if their employer does not currently offer them a way to save. More than 50 million American workers have no access to a retirement savings plan through their employers and more than a quarter (26%) of non-retired people have no retirement savings. On November 9 AARP Minnesota, Black Women’s Wealth Alliance, Bridgemakers, and Youthprise are joining forces to host a panel discussion on the challenges four generations – Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers – face while saving for their futures.

Black History Month presents a unique opportunity to celebrate the achievements, culture and history of the African American and Black community in February. AARP encourages everyone to celebrate Black History Month by participating in activities that teach us about the resilience and power of the black community and help us gain a better appreciation of the culture.

Americans still pay the highest prices for prescription drugs in the world. It's time Minnesota legislators did something to make sure nobody is forced to choose between food and medicine. But they need to hear from you! 

Project Food Forest has been named a recipient of a 2020 AARP Community Challenge grant, one of four grantees selected in Minnesota. With this grant, Project Food Forest will be making improvements to the Prairie Ally Outdoor Center by adding three commissioned sculptural trellises and two circular picnic tables.

During Black History Month, AARP MN pays tribute to local leaders’ work and impact in community. AARP MN is proud to highlight our partnership with artist, writer, advocate, and community leader, Andrea Jenkins, for her work on behalf of older adults with special focus placed on elders in LGBTQ and African American communities.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations’ Minneapolis Field Office has announced that Jay Haapala, Associate State Director of Community Engagement for AARP Minnesota, is the recipient of the 2020 Director’s Community Leadership Award (DCLA).
