AARP Georgia is pleased to announce that the City of Augusta has requested to be designated as an Age-Friendly Community in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, affiliated with the World Health Organization (WHO).
In partnership with the Office of the Mayor of Augusta and the Richmond County Commission, AARP Georgia is hosting an Open House to provide more information on what denotes an Age-Friendly Community on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the KROC Center, 1833 Broad Street, Augusta, Georgia. Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver and Richmond County Commissioner William Lockett will share remarks on the Age-Friendly Communities designation.
“This Open House will be a great opportunity for community members to come together and begin learning about the Age-Friendly Community concept,” says Karen R. Cooper, Associate State Director, Community Outreach, AARP Georgia State Office. “We will also plan a larger event once the designation has been approved by the AARP Network of Age Friendly Communities and the World Health Organization.”
An Age-Friendly Community is designed to establish an inclusive and accessible environment that encourages active and healthy aging. It also proactively focuses on those elements of communities that enhance independent living with a goal of having older citizens take a more active role in their communities.
The Age-Friendly Communities program provides an excellent opportunity to broaden support from other agencies and organizations for much of the work that is currently underway in the Augusta area.
