Kent Sovern

In July 2011, I was honored to be named as the new AARP Iowa state director. Prior to joining AARP, I served as President of the New Iowa Group and Executive Director of the Iowa Parks Foundation. Earlier, I was named the Executive Director of the Des Moines Higher Education Collaborative after serving 10 years as Senior Vice President of Government and International Relations at the Greater Des Moines Partnership. I was also Director of Public Policy for the League of Iowa Municipalities and legislative liaison for the Iowa Department of Employment Services. I began my professional career as an elementary school teacher and became a school administrator before beginning a career in public policy and association management. All this is to say "This guy can't seem to keep a job!" I am a native of Fort Madison, Iowa and a decorated combat veteran. My spouse, Phyllis Mumford-Sovern and I are active in the Des Moines Theater community as actors and volunteers. I am a member of several professional associations and business groups throughout the Greater Des Moines community. I recently resigned from the Plan and Zoning Commission for the City of Des Moines after serving as Vice-Chair for almost 12 years.
