Spring is around the corner and many Mississippians are ready to plant their gardens. AARP Mississippi will present a Facebook gardening series beginning on the first day of Spring on March 20 at 11 a.m.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is providing free in-person and virtual tax assistance and preparation in Mississippi now through April 18. The nation’s largest free, volunteer-based tax assistance and preparation program helped secure more than $1 billion in refunds for more than 1.2 million taxpayers last year. Tax-Aide is offered in conjunction with the IRS, and AARP membership is not required.
Gwendolyn Spencer Prater, Ph.D. is State President of AARP Mississippi. She is responsible for leading volunteers throughout the state as they work on issues and projects that have a direct impact on people over age 50. Dr. Prater works with the AARP Mississippi State Director and staff on issues, such as family caregiving, fraud prevention, financial security and more.

Who doesn’t want to give their loved ones that perfect holiday postcard moment? You know, the big box with a bow that has a furry new member of the family inside. Unfortunately, that desire to create a cherished memory of a holiday pet leads many to a scam they won’t soon forget.
Most U.S. consumers will purchase a gift card for someone this holiday season. While these gifts are easy to give and popular to get, they are also open to fraud. A 2022 AARP survey found that one in four people have either given or received a gift card with no funds on it.
Holiday shopping, like most shopping these days, has moved online, and that poses unique risks, according to a new AARP survey. More than 75% of U.S. consumers reported that they have experienced some kind of fraud and a similar share of consumers failed a 9-question safe shopping quiz.

Hawkins, Sr., of Pascagoula, has been selected by AARP, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive the 2022 AARP Mississippi Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.
