A new AARP survey demonstrates older Georgians overwhelmingly support bipartisan legislation to combat age discrimination in the workplace. The recent poll of registered voters 50 and older found a remarkable 84 percent favor passage of the bipartisan "Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act" (POWADA). The annual Andrus Award for Community Service is AARP's most prestigious and visible volunteer award. It recognizes individuals who are sharing their experience, talent, and skills to enrich their communities in ways that are consistent with AARP's mission, vision, and commitment to volunteer service, and that inspire others to volunteer. Only one volunteer per state (or couple performing service together) can receive the Award.
Today, in the midst of Older Americans Month, AARP volunteers and staff from every state visited Capitol Hill to urge their elected representatives to back bills, including the Older Americans Act, that can help Americans live their best lives. Myrtle S. Habersham, a member of AARP Georgia's Executive Council and Macon-Bibb resident is representing our state. She works with our Associate State Director of Community Outreach, Karen Cooper, to develop strategies for Age-Friendly Macon-Bibb.

Bridging the Digital Divide is the aim of the AARP T.E.K. (Technology, Education, Knowledge) program in Georgia. These workshops will be held all year at megachurches and community centers throughout metro Atlanta.
Macon-Bibb was the first designated Age-Friendly Community in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, an affiliate of the World Health Organization. A Macon-Bibb Age-Friendly Town Hall will be held at the Methodist Home, 304 Pierce Ave., on Friday, May 16, from 9 a.m. -1 p.m., and lunch will be included. The Town Hall will be held in the Rumford Center, and there is no cost to attend or for the lunch.
Augusta is a designated Age-Friendly Community in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, an affiliate of the World Health Organization. An Augusta Age-Friendly Town Hall will be held at the KROC Center, 1833 Broad Street, on Tuesday, May 13, from 1-3 p.m.
Celebrate Atlanta becoming an Age-Friendly Community at the Atlanta City Hall Atrium, 55 Trinity Avenue, SW, Atlanta on Monday, May 5, at 11 am during a press conference and festivities for Senior Day. AARP Georgia will join City of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed to announce Atlanta’s designation as an Age-Friendly Community in honor of Older Atlantans Month. The designation is from the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, affiliated with the World Health Organization (WHO).
