As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

In honor of Black History Month, AARP California is encouraging you to pass on your stories, your knowledge and your love as part of our month-long focus on family legacy. Throughout the month we will be highlighting Californian grandparents and their efforts to share stories and build legacy with their grandbabies. This week we interviewed Elaine and Garrison Ross of Campbell, CA.
Beginning February and continuing through April 15 th, AARP Foundation is providing free in-person tax assistance and preparation through its Tax-Aide program in California and nationwide. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide started in 1968 and is the nation’s largest volunteer-run free tax preparation service. Tax-Aide volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year. There’s no fee, and AARP membership is not required.

Wildfires are a fact of life in California, but we’ve never seen anything like the devastation of the past two years. Millions of Californians have been affected, from breathing unhealthy air to losing their homes, and even losing loved ones. These fires have brought unprecedented sorrow and hardship to Californians of all ages -- but particularly to older Californians, who sadly represent a large portion of the fatalities caused by these fires.
