Con artists have latched on to gift cards as a convenient, untraceable form of payment in their scams. That’s why AARP Delaware supported a new law, which was sponsored by State Representative Larry Lambert, requiring retailers selling third-party gift cards to post signage alerting customers to protect themselves from gift card scams and telling them how to report it. The bill is aligned with AARP’s efforts to prevent fraud through its Fraud Watch Network, and had AARP Delaware's full support as it sailed through the Legislature and passed unanimously.
Assisted living facilities that offer memory care must now employ specialized staff trained in handling dementia patients, under a new law supported by AARP Delaware.

Romance scams start with fake profiles on online dating sites. The scammer, who is conveniently working abroad, quickly builds a relationship with the targeted victim, exchanging photos, romantic messages, or even talking by phone. Then they will make a request: money needed for an emergency or maybe to plan an in-person visit. The target sends money, and then never hears from the love interest again.
Ads for jobs guaranteeing you will make a certain amount of money or that you can work from home are probably scams. If you respond to the ad, you’ll likely be asked to send money so you can either get the job, acquire more job listings, receive supplies to start a business at home, or obtain special “certification” that’s supposed to get you a job. If an ad for a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
There’s a new scam we recently heard about. A resident receives an official-looking letter from a law firm in the state, outlining a family member’s prior criminal conviction, describing the verdict, and then stating there is an outstanding fine or fee. The letter directs the resident to send a check to clear the expense. If you receive a letter like this, contact local law enforcement.

The Create the Good Dream Builders Video Contest is open through February 7. This initiative, in its second year, builds on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream” message as well as AARP’s commitment to livable communities and service. The contest invites individuals to submit a video about a “dream” volunteer project they are currently working on - or want to carry out - in collaboration with a community non-profit. AARP will narrow down the entries and then post the 12 finalists for a public vote, which will be held from February 15 through 28. The Grand Prize is a $2,500 donation to the non-profit acknowledged in the winner’s video entry to help bring their dream project to life. The top three runner-ups will win $500 donations to support their efforts. Please help us spread the word to individuals across your state!
