LGBT Town Hall for Older Adults to Address Discrimination, Advocacy

The diverse population of Tampa Bay is one of the reasons why it’s one of the top communities in the country. At AARP we believe in driving positive social change and enhancing the quality of life for persons of all ages, from all diverse backgrounds, including the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender (LGBT) community.

Last year we participated in the St. Petersburg Pride Festival to listen to what our LGBT community members had to about living in Tampa Bay. We engaged with more than 360 local residents who shared their ideas and opinions about how to make St. Pete a better place to live, and identified issues most prevalent to them of they say affect the local 50+ LGBT population. (See detailed infographic below.)

One outcome of these discussions was to host a town all with state and local equality organizations so we could collectively approach these issues. AARP Tampa Bay is partnering with SAGE (Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders) and Equality Florida to discuss the issues LGBT older adults face and learn how we can help this vulnerable demographic can be empowered to advocate on their own behalf.
