The Massachusetts House of Representatives passed a landmark bill creating its first-ever Caregiver Commission—during National Family Caregivers Month. AARP MA thanks legislators for championing the 1.4M caregivers across the Commonwealth
As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

The Commonwealth is home to more than 1 million residents age 65 and over. Some of these people are both financially secure and healthy. However, a recent Massachusetts Commission on Elder Economic Security report highlighted that 6 in 10 single elders do not have the income to meet their basic needs. They are often aided by the MassHealth program, which includes Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
AARP Massachusetts is working with the Small Business Administration to help adults 50-plus start or expand a small business. Advice and resources for “encore entrepreneurs” will be available next month in Roxbury and the Merrimack Valley.
What’s your image of a caregiver? If you envisaged a middle-aged woman, one who is caring for an ailing parent, you wouldn’t be wrong. AARP research shows that the “typical” family caregiver is a 49-year old woman who cares for a relative.

The Caregiver, Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act takes effect March 8, requiring state agencies to develop guidance for hospitals to ease the transition back home for patients and their caregivers.
