The Heat Is On—and Costly. Tackling High Energy Bills

Granite Staters are bracing for rising utility bills while already dealing with high inflation. Here are some ways to make those energy bills a little more reasonable.

The tips not only help during frigid winters, they could also keep extra money in your pocket during the summer.

Among the solutions:

  • Weatherize your home. Change the furnace filter and use a programmable thermostat. Caulk cracks around doors and windows. Install door sweeps and weather stripping.
  • Seek help. Government agencies and utility companies have assistance programs that can help with monthly bills and weatherization improvements, as well as ensuring that your power stays on if you have a critical medical need.
  • Take advantage of program options that can help cushion the blow of high winter bills. For example, budget billing plans allow you to average your monthly costs over the entire year.

The expected increase in energy costs is due to higher fuel prices and higher heating demand as forecasters predict a slightly colder winter than last year, says the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
