AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel issued the following statement today on Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2026 State of the State Message:
“AARP New York commends Governor Hochul for proposing a bold vision to help older New Yorkers connect to and keep essential benefits and address the high costs of utilities and prescription drugs.
For years, AARP New York has advocated for a comprehensive, easy-to-navigate solution that helps New Yorkers access the benefits and services for which they are eligible. The creation of a one-stop shop to connect older New Yorkers to benefits across agencies, leading to the development of a universal benefits application, will reduce red tape and allow older adults to continue living in their communities with dignity. This proposal, coupled with a commitment to safeguard SNAP benefits from skimming, will ensure that New Yorkers are getting – and keeping – the help they need.
Energy affordability is a critical component of helping people live and age with independence and dignity. We applaud the Governor for her comprehensive proposals to address utility affordability, including efforts to enroll more people in the Energy Affordability Program, protecting ratepayers’ pocketbooks from energy-intensive data centers, and increasing transparency and accountability for utility companies.
New Yorkers have long paid some of the highest prescription drug prices in the nation. By enhancing direct negotiations with manufacturers, the state can deliver real cost savings and help ensure residents can afford the medications they need to live long, healthy lives.
We look forward to seeing the Governor’s budget proposals. We stand ready to work with the Governor and the Legislature to turn this vision into reality during the current legislative session.”
