Newburgh, N.Y. – Carole McDermott received yesterday AARP’s highest state volunteer honor, the 2024 AARP New York Andrus Award for Community Service for her many decades of volunteer work making sure homebound people received meals.
The award was formally presented to McDermott at a ceremony at Vesuvio’s Ristorante, 300 Dupont Ave., Newburgh.
AARP New York selected McDermott for her remarkable service, which has greatly benefited her community, reflected the vision and mission of AARP, and inspired other volunteers. She is the current volunteer president of Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh, Inc., a position she has held since 2010. She has also served on the board of directors for New York State Meals on Wheels.
“This award acts as a symbol to the public that we can all work together for positive social change,” says AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel. “At AARP, we value the spirit of volunteerism, and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors and the programs they serve.”
“Carole put her banking experience and time to use helping so many people, putting in countless hours at no cost to the organization. She has changed the lives of those around her and inspired others to volunteer. It is people like Carole that make places communities,” said Assemblyman Jonathan G. Jacobson (D-Newburgh), who nominated McDermott for the award.
McDermott, a former vice president and international trade specialist in the banking industry, has also been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. Her community service work has been recognized with a Citizen of the Month Award from Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus in 2019, the Community Service Award from Les Soeurs Amiables Civic Club in 2015 and the Everyday Hero Award from the Kiwanis Club of Newburgh in 2015.
Named for AARP Founder Ethel Percy Andrus, the award recognizes outstanding individuals who are sharing their experience, talents and skills to enrich the lives of others.
Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community in or for which the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
