Keep Your Utilities On: Self-Certify Today

More than 1.2 million New Yorkers are behind on their utility bills—many due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are struggling with your utility bills due to COVID, you may be eligible for protection from losing your internet, electricity, heat and water through the end of 2021. But you must “self-certify” with your utility company to prevent a shutoff.

Self-certifying is an easy process:

  • Follow the links below to find your utility provider or call the phone number on your utility bill.
  • Tell the utility that you want to “self-certify” that you have experienced financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Ask for a confirmation number before getting off the phone to be sure they are accepting your request. Also keep a record of the date, time and name of the representative on the call.
