On May 14, AARP launched the Countdown to 90 Years—a recognition and call to action leading up to the 90th anniversary of Social Security on August 14, 2025. For nine decades, Social Security has been a stable and reliable foundation of retirement security for millions of Americans—and we believe it must remain that way for generations to come.

    A Legacy of Security

Since 1935, Social Security has provided essential support to retirees, people with disabilities, and families who’ve lost a loved one—delivering on a promise earned through a lifetime of work. For 90 years, it has never missed a payment, serving over 67 million Americans today, including nearly 3.8 million in New York. As its milestone anniversary approaches, protecting and strengthening Social Security remains crucial.

    A System Under Pressure

Despite Social Security's stable history, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is facing growing challenges:

    • Workforce Cuts: SSA plans to reduce its staff by 12%, raising concerns about service quality amid rising demand.
    • Phone Service Changes: A now-rescinded proposal to limit phone access caused confusion and would have hurt older and rural Americans.
    • Overpayment Clawbacks: SSA initially sought to reclaim 100% of benefits from recipients overpaid due to agency errors; that’s now reduced to 50%, but concerns remain.

AARP is Fighting to Protect and Strengthen Social Security

For over 65 years, AARP has worked with every administration and Congress to protect and strengthen Social Security. Today, AARP continues to lead efforts to defend it from harmful changes and ensure its future for generations to come. AARP is leading the charge through these efforts:

    • Stopped bad policy: We mobilized members and stopped the SSA from implementing burdensome changes that would have made it more difficult for Americans to access information and payments.
    • Demanded accountability: We’ve called out delays, excessive call wait times, and staffing shortages, demanding that the SSA prioritize service and accessibility.
    • Mobilized millions: Thanks to the voices of our members, over 3 million messages have been sent to members of Congress urging them to protect and strengthen Social Security.
