With an art world historically dominated by men considered geniuses, women have often struggled to find a place. This Women's History Month, AARP New York will shed a light on women artists and their work.
AARP members and guests are invited to join us a four-webinar series on Wednesdays in March titled The Rise of Women Artists in America where participants learn about the sweep of American women’s history through a close look at the lives and work of women artists. By the mid-1800s in the United States, some women were less eager to make art as a social nicety and were willing to buck the boundaries of propriety to find their place and recognition as professionals.
Regardless of success during their lifetimes, most fell into obscurity. After all, our historical memory extends only to the few, and for American women artists, only two readily come to mind from the 19th and 20th centuries. It's time to re-engage with these two artists, as well as resuscitate the careers of the lesser known. Together they paint a portrait of the joys and challenges of becoming working artists, as well as the radically changing world of modern America. Join NYS Professor for a survey of art in America that highlights the often overlooked but transformational contributions of women in art.
