RALEIGH — Because Social Security is a bedrock of retirement security for 2.3 million North Carolinians and has never missed a payment since the program was created 90 years ago this month, Governor Josh Stein is helping draw attention to the importance of the program on its milestone anniversary.

The proclamation will be shared at several birthday parties being held across North Carolina on August 14, to celebrate the program's success.

Signed into law on August 14, 1935, Social Security is earned by workers through contributions they make from their first paycheck to their last.

In addition to the support Social Security provides to 2.3 million North Carolina retirees, disabled and children to help pay for basic needs like housing, food and health care, it also contributes significantly to the state's economy providing $47 billion annually in economic activity.

Ninety-year old Patricia Penn of Raleigh, born on the same year Social Security was established said, "When me and my husband retired, we weren't sure how we would navigate. But Social Security coming in regularly has helped us feel relaxed and not worry about income."

Altough Social Security is only one piece of a secure retirement, it lifts 586,000 North Carolinians out of poverty. Without it, 43.5 percent of adults over the age of 65 in the state would be impoverished.

Because Social Security has stood the test of time, providing peace of mind for people of all walks of life regardless of income, background or political affiliation, Governor Stein is joining a chorus of supporters who are committed to protecting and strengthening Social Security for current and future generations.
