NC Senate budget shortchanges important services and hurts those with high medical expenses

When the state Senate revealed its budget proposal Monday night, it did NOT include fully-restored, uncapped medical deductions, or increased funding for the Home and Community Care Block Grant that helps people live independently in their own homes.  Instead, the Senate proposed a $20,000 combined cap for all itemized deductions and no change to the Block Grant funding.

Because medical deductions shield North Carolinians' from the impact of high health care expenses, AARP supports the House’s budget recommendation to fully restore medical expense deductions to all ages and not subject these deductions to a cap.

Restoring money that was taken away from the Block Grant program will better enable older adults to live independently at home by funding transportation services, in-home health aides, food delivery services such as Meals on Wheels and more. There is currently a waiting list for these services across the state.

You still have time to get both medical deductions and increased funding for the Home and Community Care Block Grant into the final budget that's sent to the Governor for his signature. Take Action! Click HERE to contact State House and Senate leaders with a personal message.
