As federal SNAP benefits face potential suspension, thousands of Oklahomans, especially older adults, are wondering how they will put food on the table. But across the state, a network of food banks, tribal nations, and local organizations is stepping up to fill the gap.
As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

The City of Tulsa is one of six cities that are part of a new program that AARP and Cities of Service just launched called Experience Matters. Through this program, the City of Tulsa is recruiting for two AmeriCorps VISTA positions to engage adults age 50+ to develop volunteering initiatives that address public problems related to the drivers of poverty.

AARP Oklahoma applauds the settlement filed today between OG&E and parties to the case, including AARP. The settlement halts a proposed $77.6 million per year rate increase, and as importantly, rejects a proposed 70 percent increase of the customer monthly charge, which is a substantial win for residential ratepayers.
