The 17th annual AARP Oklahoma Native American Elder Honors celebrated 49 Native American elders from 23 Oklahoma tribal nations for their achievements, community service, and impact. Since 2009, AARP Oklahoma has recognized over 800 Native American elders from the state's 39 tribal nations.
AARP Oklahoma urges Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) customers and Oklahoma Corporation Commission to reject PSO's $170 million utility rate hike proposal. If approved by Corporation Commissioners, Dana Murphy, Bob Anthony, and Todd Hiett, PSO's customer bills will increase $14 a month or $168 per year.

Nona Penner of Yukon was honored, posthumously, for positively impacting the lives of others throughout her life. She was named the recipient of the 2017 AARP Oklahoma Andrus Award for Community Service, which is the highest honor presented by AARP, at a luncheon in Oklahoma City on November 14, 2017. Penner was one of six nominees.

A new state law, which takes effect Nov. 1, aims to expand the number of places across the state that connect family caregivers with local resources. The Oklahoma Caregiver Support Act directs the state Department of Human Services to work with community groups to improve access to caregiver services in low, middle and high income areas. Schools and city and county facilities will provide information, counseling, training and in some cases vouchers to help caregivers.
