Cities of McAlester and Elk City and the Delaware Nation awarded grants to transform outdoor spaces

Congratulations to The City of Tulsa, one of six national winners of the Cities of Service Experience Matters competition. With support from AARP, Cities of Service will work with Tulsa to develop volunteering initiatives that address public problems related to the drivers of poverty.

AARP is now accepting nominations for its 2019 Oklahoma Andrus Award for Community Service, which honors age-50+ Oklahomans who are sharing their experience, talent, and skills to enrich the lives of their community members.

AARP Oklahoma is hosting military appreciation night at the Tulsa Drillers minor-league baseball game on Saturday, July 6; service members and veterans will receive two free tickets for field reserved seats with a military ID.

AARP is now accepting applications for the 2019 Community Challenge grant program to fund “quick-action” projects that spark change in local communities. The grant program, which is now in its third year, is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which aims to make communities great places to live for everyone.

AARP Oklahoma livability surveys for the communities of Tulsa, Norman, Shawnee and Vinita have been extended to be open until February 28. The surveys will gather community feedback to determine attitudes and opinions on a variety of topics, such as housing, outdoor spaces, transportation and streets, health and wellness, social participation, educational opportunities, volunteering and civic engagement and job opportunities.

An online survey designed to provide information to improve the quality of life for older citizens kicks off in four Oklahoma communities this week. Downtown Vinita, a rural community of 5,700, has become more hospitable to pedestrians, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the AARP Community Challenge program.

AARP Oklahoma presented a $3,000 honorary grant check today to Oklahoma State University’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service to support OSU’s rural broadband outreach program.
