Position Description - National Volunteer Engagement Advisor

Position Function
In partnership with the Vice President for Volunteer Engagement, the National Volunteer Engagement Advisor (NVEA) is responsible for providing advice and guidance for AARP’s volunteer and service engagement and support strategies. Using his or her understanding of the Association’s organizational structure, issues and priorities, the NVEA provides input to ensure development and integration of volunteer engagement and service strategies within State and Community Engagement and across AARP. As appropriate, NVEA may serve as a resource or liaison to efforts coordinated by various national office teams.  The NVEA is also encouraged to share with his or her staff partner insights and best practices from other non-profits for whom they have volunteered.

Responsibilities

  • Partner and advisor to the Vice President for the Office of Volunteer Engagement
  • Chair of the Volunteer Engagement and Advisory Council (VEAC)
  • Champion for the inclusion of volunteers in planning and implementation discussions focused on volunteer and community engagement.

Qualifications

  • AARP membership required
  • Current or immediate past AARP volunteer (the successful NVEA candidate may not hold dual roles as a state, regional or national leader within their volunteer program)
  • Commitment to, and awareness of, the goals and priorities of AARP
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and planning abilities
  • Ability to clearly articulate ideas and effectively lead meetings
  • Ability to understand and work well with diverse populations
  • Strong skills in leadership, volunteer coordination, public speaking and coaching volunteer leaders
  • Ability to assess and respond to a dynamic environment
  • Comfortable using email, the Volunteer Portal and other technology such as FaceTime
  • Volunteer experience with other non-profits

Term of Service
Two (2) years in a non-renewable position.

Training Required
Orientation to AARP and the Office of Volunteer Engagement
Issue and skills training as necessary

Travel Required
Some travel and attendance at state/ national meetings and activities as appropriate, with regularly scheduled (quarterly) trips to the Office of Volunteer Engagement in Washington, DC.

Appointed and Supervised By
Vice President, Office of Volunteer Engagement

Progress Review
The performance of the National Volunteer Engagement Advisor will be monitored on an ongoing basis by the Vice President for Volunteer Engagement according to policy guidelines.

Available Resources
AARP will provide volunteer travel accident insurance and commercial general liability insurance while performing volunteer responsibilities.  Travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with existing AARP policies.  Access to an internet-connected device (e.g. i-phone or i-pad) will be provided if needed.
