AARP WV State President discusses National Family Caregivers Month and the impact of caregiving on our lives

NY’s Counties & Hospitals, Advocates for the Aging, Legislative Aging Chairs, Others Seek $252.5M Increase, Boosting Preventive & Cost-Saving Services

Throughout 2024, AARP DC continued to advocate for policies to empower District residents to improve their lives and choose where and how they live as they age. AARP DC has a long history of supporting older District residents who want to live independently as they age. This year, AARP DC fought for issues that matter most to seniors, their families and caregivers.

November is National Family Caregiving Month, and AARP Wyoming wishes to salute the estimated 58,000 family caregivers in the state who give 54 million hours each year helping their older parents, spouses, and other loved ones live independently.

Across the country, someone’s identity is stolen every two seconds. Fraud is an escalating crisis, with losses far exceeding what is reported. While $9 billion in fraud losses were reported in 2022, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates the true financial impact at $137 billion due to underreporting. The impact on victims and their families can be financially and emotionally devastating, especially for older Americans.

Fraud cost veterans, service members, and their families $477 million in 2023, according to the latest Federal Trade Commission (FTC) data, and this only includes fraud that was reported. With over 85% of veterans having encountered service-related scams in the last 12 months, now is a great time to review some of the most prevalent scams targeting current and former service members.

Two special volunteers recognized for exceptional service to their community.

The October 2024 AARP Volunteer Summit was an incredible gathering, brimming with excitement and a powerful sense of purpose! Each year, dedicated AARP volunteers from across the state and our tight-knit team of four staff from the Wyoming State Office come together to reconnect, rejuvenate, and dive into fresh ideas and initiatives that strengthen our communities. This year, we saw our shared commitment deepen toward AARP's five priorities: Fraud Prevention, Caregiving, Social Connections, Veterans Support, and Brain Health.

When Tropical Storm Helene slammed into western North Carolina, AARP volunteer leaders and staff all across the state were anxious to help. Many ideas were proposed, but it was a single photograph in the Citizen Times of the devastation of a veterans housing site in Swannanoa, one of the hardest hit towns, that spoke most powerfully of the tremendous need in the Mountain Region.

Volunteers will place wreaths on veterans’ graves, offering a profound gesture of respect and gratitude for their service.
