AARP Fraud Watch Network has received reports of door-to- door, telephone, email and ad scams offering bogus COVID-19 testing kits and cures and promising stimulus checks.

AARP New Jersey partners with the state’s Division of Consumer Affairs and other agencies to get fraud warnings out through conferences, forums and shredding events.

Financial Empowerment Center counselors can help individuals find housing or emergency assistance, open and learn how to use a bank account, or work out payment plans with creditors, among other services.

We pay monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to people with disabilities who have low income and few resources, and people who are age 65 or older without disabilities who meet the financial limits.

There has also been no shortage of questionable debt settlement companies promising to reduce North Carolinians’ debts. Too often, after charging high fees, they only deliver increased debts, collection suits and ruined credit. To help prevent abuses from these companies, legislative action is urgently needed.
